A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its role in public projects. They were built at an rapid pace, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party called for an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
